Things on Film

As promised, here are some Joshua Tree shots from my film camera. I should explain that my film camera is not some super expensive, fancy schmancy job that takes crisp, clean photos with that ever-illusive film look. No, my film camera is a $50 Diana+ that is a replica of a 99 cent camera from the ’50s. It’s a Lomo camera, and if you know anything about those you know they are known for the light leaks, saturated and/or muted colors, vignetting and overall surreal feeling they lend to the images created with them.

My Diana+ was a Christmas gift from Chris and the Joshua Tree trip was the first time I got a chance to use it. Admittedly, Chris used it more than I did (shots of him using it can be found in this entry) because I was busy with my trusty digital. But, I did make sure I had a few cracks at it and while the results are less than amazing, I was reminded of how much fun shooting film is. It was especially entertaining with this camera that had absolutely zero bells and whistles and seemed to weigh less than a feather.

I scanned these images late last night right before going to bed. I’m noticing now that my scanner needs to be cleaned! Oh well, just adds to the crazy film look, I suppose. ;)

Two Step

Today I pick up some rolls of film from being developed––images that will end up being the last I post from Joshua Tree. I’ll post them here either over the weekend or on Monday. In the meantime, I present to you…DINOSAURS!

Obviously we had to stop by Cabazon to check out the dinosaurs on our way home. Chris had never been and was very excited to see them. The interesting thing is it seems the dinos have been bought by some Christian group that refutes evolution and seems to believe in Big Foot and other strange creatures because the dino-owner told us they’re opening a Cryptozoology museum this summer. Very strange. In addition to the museum they’re adding more dinosaurs. We were able to peek our head over the fence behind T-Rex to see a Stegosaurus and Triceratops. Exciting stuff.

Take Me Away

Yesterday was an extremely difficult day for me and Chris because of wedding related stresses that came to a head all at once. Any feelings of calm and tranquility that may have carried over from our weekend alone in Joshua Tree were sucked away by the end of the day. Here are a few shots taken around the house we rented. It was a nice little desert house that we both felt very much at home in. I wish we could be there right now. But, I’ll have to settle with reliving the experience through photos. Enjoy!

Where the Streets Have No Name

How about some non-Chris photos from Joshua Tree? Let’s be honest, the man is my favorite subject, but other people might want me to switch it up a bit.

As pretty as Joshua Tree was, I wasn’t moved to take many nature-ish shots, oddly enough. I took a lot of shots of Chris in nature and then not so much without him––until we stumbled across the World Famous Crochet Museum that is.

If You Weren’t Real I Would Make You Up

When Chris and I met, I fell for him right away. But not in that insane head-over-heels way. No, I feel for him in a very reasonable way in that I recognized that he was a really nice guy who I had a lot in common with who also made me laugh almost non-stop. No, the insane head-over-heels part came later and I think our relationship is better off for it. I honestly feel as though I fall in love with Chris a little more every single day. Cheesy? Maybe. Cliche? Definitely. But, hey, whatareyougonnado?

I’m gonna marry this man. I feel like I’ve won the lottery every time I think about it. I don’t know where I’d be if I didn’t know him. All I know is I’m a better person for having known him and that’s what it’s all about for me.

There are a ton more images of this guy after the jump!

I Feel It All

We returned from Joshua Tree yesterday afternoon. It was an amazing weekend, but boy, am I beat. Hanging out in the desert can take a lot out of a person––and we didn’t even rock climb, or anything! The house we stayed in was amazing and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. But, the whole point of the trip was for Chris and I to spend some quality time together and that mission was accomplished. We have a lot of fun together when it’s just the two of us.

Of course the secondary mission for the weekend was to take photos, photos and even more photos. Chris served as my muse, and as you can see from the photos above, he makes a great one. I love that face.

I’ve got hundreds of photos to pore through, so please stay tuned!

No One Else Can Feel It For You

I’ve decided to start a new weekly installment. Every Friday I’m going to pick a song I’m really into at the moment and put it up here for people to listen to. Mostly because I just really like music and I get a lot of joy out of sharing my favorite songs with people. Sometimes these songs will be new songs, sometimes they’ll be old songs–no limits!

I’ll pair each song with an image, just to stay true to the nature of a photo blog. Today’s image is from a black “sand” beach in Maui.

This week’s song is by Jonathan Rice. I’ve had this song on my computer for some time now, but I don’t remember how or why I have it. I usually listen to my music on random in iTunes and whenever this song comes on I get chills the first time the chorus starts up. Rice has a very powerful voice, especially in person. I was able to catch him live late last year and during the show I was reminded of this song, which hadn’t popped up in my player in a while. Ever since the night of that show I’ve made a point to seek the song out just to let it play on loop a few times. I hope you enjoy it.

You’re in My Dreams

wing.jpeg

I’m saying this here and now with the hopes that it’ll encourage me to do something about it: I’m in a rut.

While it’s true I haven’t had much free time to go out and photograph for fun lately, I also haven’t been utilizing what little opportunity I’ve had. Instead of spending a couple of hours this weekend with my camera, I spent some extra hours visiting my family, and I don’t feel guilty about that one bit. I do, however, wish that I felt more inspired.

This isn’t to say that I’m not inspired once I do get behind the camera. Once I pick it up, I’m perfectly fine, so my clients (present and future) need not worry! It’s just getting myself to pick up the camera and create images just for the joy of it that I can’t seem to get back to lately. But I’ll get there again, I know it!

In fact, I already have a particular project in mind. When I told Chris about it, he suggested we take a weekend away so that I can focus just on that project. Sounded like a great idea to me. So, in a couple of weeks we’ll be renting a house in Joshua Tree for the weekend. The house looks magical and I’ve never been to Joshua tree, so I absolutely cannot wait for this trip. I’m hoping the locale will jump start my creativity.

Speaking of creativity, Chris has launched a new site called Creatively Stunted (hey, that’s the perfect term for what I’m going through right now!) He’ll be writing about all kinds of things like music, books, movies, etc. Chris gets a lot of his inspiration from the creativity of others. He’s the type who can talk for hours about a movie or an album–and he always has something really worthwhile to say.

I’m usually inspired by nature and emotion, but what inspires you?

Do Nothing

Since I made the decision to post every day on this blog, I’ve done just that–until yesterday. That’s okay, though, the main part of the site is getting a super-duper upgrade and will be awesome in no time, so I was focusing on my photography, just in a different way.

Last night I rushed home after work to get some shots of the lunar eclipse, but by the time I got there it was too late. So, this shot from last summer will have to do. It was a discarded one that I found when going through my files. When I took it I was standing in the middle of a New Mexico road and the entire world was completely silent.

Please Stop Raining

beth.jpeg

This past Summer, Chris and I flew to South Dakota for his cousin Ian’s wedding. It was a weekend event that brought together one side of Chris’ family almost in its entirety. Everyone spent their time at a fantastic little cabin on the Missouri River bed that was owned by the bride Beth’s family. The weather was gorgeous the entire time we there–until minutes before the wedding was scheduled to start, of course. The rain came down in buckets at first and the crowd of guests crammed into the tiny main room of the cabin to take refuge. There was a Plan B in case of rain, but Beth had her heart set on getting married next to that river since she had spent many summers there growing up. The group huddled together, waiting for the rain to let up. Beth stood in white amongst her family and friends, pacing between the group and the window to see if there was a sign of clear skies.

I snapped this shot during one of her last trips to the window. You can also see her mother-in-law Joan in the reflection of the window. Joan and Beth stood at that window for a few minutes just staring at the sky. I really felt for Beth at that moment–it was obvious how much she was hoping the storm clouds would move along. The group left the final choice up to Beth who ultimately decided to move to Plan B: getting married at the nearby winery where the reception was being held. The ceremony was lovely either way–rain or shine, riverbed or winery.
